We met for the first time on July 10, 1999 at the same place that we are
having our reception. For those of you that don't know our story, here it goes:    John was the best man in T.J. Ice's wedding. Melissa went to the wedding because T.J. Ice was her cousin. We didn't meet at the wedding, although I did shake his hand as well as the rest of the hands of the other members of the wedding party as I left the church. John thought that I was taken, because he thought my brother was my date! At the reception, it came time for the traditional toast by the best man. As John stood up, I said to my cousins at my table, "He is pretty good looking." They all began to joke around and said something like, "That's John True, we've known him forever!" Later on in the reception, as the music was playing, my cousins began to tease me and say that they were going to ask John to dance with me. I told them not to, and I honestly didn't think that they would . I was sitting down at a table talking to a friend and sure enough, John True walked up to me asking me to dance with him. They had asked him to dance with me! Later, he had told me that he thought that he knew all of the Ice cousins. But, he had never met me. So, as we danced (or should I say, tried to dance) he began to ask me question after question. "So, who are you anyways?" "What do you do?" "Who are your parents?" "Where do you live?" So, because of all the questions, is the reason why we can't remember the name of the first song we ever danced to.    After our one dance, the shy John did not ask me to dance again for the rest of the evening. Although, he did come up to me several times during the evening making small talk with Dawn Mays and occasionally he would talk to me. Near the end of the reception, we were all outside of the Mt. Olympus Gym lighting off fireworks. I remember, he came back to talk to me and I thought, well maybe he'll ask for a phone number or ask me out on a date. Well, I thought wrong. He started talking about e-mail and asking if we used e-mail. So, I said yes, I use hotmail. Later, I found out that he was trying to get my e-mail address out of me. That night, we were two of last ones to leave the gym. We even stayed to help clean up! Still, no asking for a phone number or a date. That night he walked me around to my car and we left.............    The next day, I remember going to church and sitting next to Kaitlyn, who is my maid-of-honor, and said, "I met a guy last night!" We didn't talk about it a whole lot because I did not think that I would be hearing from him. After all, he had no way of finding out my contact information and I knew that he lived in Michigan City.    The next week, I went up to northern Indiana and Chicago to spend time with my friend Carrie. When I got home that Sunday, I had a message that was left on my parent's answering machine from my cousin Emily. So, I returned her call and she said that she wanted my permission to give John my e-mail address. I told her that was fine, but I thought that she was just joking around with me and that it was all a joke. Later that evening, I checked my e-mail and I had gotten an e-mail from John:
I was very happy to hear from him and I thought his e-mail was so cute, I wrote him back:
A few e-mails later, he finally worked up the courage to ask me for my phone number. A few days later, he said that he was coming down to the area to bring his sister back home from visiting him in Michigan City and asked me if I would go out with him. So, on July 30th, 1999, we went out for the first time. He came to pick me up and we went to Chili's in Evansville and then went to watch Runaway Bride. We have been together every since then and plan to live happily ever after. |
